The game of Shillong Teer was officially regulated under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982. At the time, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Captain Williamson A. Sangma, played a pivotal role in ensuring the game’s legalization, with support from the state legislative body.
This law helped formalize the game and distinguish it from gambling, recognizing it as a betting game. Since then, the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982 has overseen all legal aspects of the Teer betting game, including the rules and regulations that govern its operation today.
