How Does the Game Work?
The Teer game is a regular part of life in Meghalaya, played from Monday to Saturday, with Sundays off. Its straightforward format and deep cultural roots make it incredibly popular—evident from the existence of over 5,000 Teer counters across the state.
Each day features two rounds of the game:
First Round: 50 trained archers shoot 30 arrows each.
Second Round: The same 50 archers shoot 20 arrows each.
After each round, the number of arrows that hit the target is counted, and the last two digits of that count form the winning number for the round. Results are announced daily—around 4:00 p.m. for the first round, and 5:00 p.m. for the second round. These times may vary slightly with the seasons (summer and winter), but the anticipation stays the same all year round.

With the support of the state legislative body, the game was legalized and distinguished as a regulated betting activity, rather than informal or illegal gambling. The Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982 was enacted to oversee all legal aspects surrounding the game, including tax collection, licensing, and operations.
Since then, Shillong Teer and similar games have been played openly and under the watch of the law, contributing both to the local economy and cultural preservation.
