The Teer game is played six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, with Sunday being a day off. The game follows a straightforward format, making it accessible to many participants.
In Meghalaya, there are over 5,000 Teer counters, which highlights the game’s immense popularity in the region.
The game consists of two rounds: the first and the second. In the first round, 50 archers shoot 30 arrows each, while in the second round, the same 50 archers shoot 20 arrows each. The results for the first round are announced at 4:00 p.m., and the results for the second round are released at 5:00 p.m.. It’s important to note that the timing for these rounds may vary slightly depending on the season, adjusting for summer and winter.

Under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982, the state government officially brought the Teer game under regulation. This legislation was introduced during the tenure of Captain Williamson A. Sangma, who was then the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya. His administration, with the backing of the state’s legislative body, played a pivotal role in legitimizing the game.
With the enactment of this law, Teer was formally recognized as a betting activity rather than a form of gambling, thereby establishing a legal framework for its regulation and operation. To this day, the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982 continues to oversee all legal aspects of Teer, ensuring that the game functions within a clearly defined legal structure.
